CALL CHARLIE • STATE FARM CLAIMS
Dealing with State Farm? They're the Biggest — Not the Fairest.
State Farm insures more vehicles than any carrier in America. Their claims process is built for volume, not accuracy.
State Farm is the largest auto insurer in the country, and they handle more claims than anyone else. That scale means your claim is processed through a system designed for speed and cost control — not individual attention. State Farm uses its own valuation tools, its own repair programs, and increasingly, its own rules. If you're dealing with a State Farm claim — whether it's a total loss, a diminished value demand, or a repair dispute — understanding how they operate is the first step to getting a fair outcome.
How State Farm Handles Claims
These are documented patterns — not opinions. Understanding them is step one.
KNOWN TACTIC
The 17c Formula for Diminished Value
State Farm popularized the "17c" diminished value formula — a methodology that starts with the vehicle's NADA retail value, applies a 10% cap, then reduces it further based on damage severity and mileage. The result is almost always a fraction of the actual diminished value. This formula came from a court case (State Farm v. Mabry) and was never intended as a proper valuation method. It's a litigation defense tool that State Farm adopted as company policy because it minimizes payouts.
KNOWN TACTIC
Removing the Appraisal Clause
State Farm has been systematically removing the appraisal clause from new and renewed policies in multiple states. This eliminates your most powerful dispute tool for total loss valuations. If your State Farm policy still has an appraisal clause, use it before it's gone. If it's already been removed, other options exist — DOI complaints, small claims court, and demand letters backed by certified appraisals.
KNOWN TACTIC
Select Service Repair Program
State Farm's Select Service program directs repairs to shops that have agreed to State Farm's pricing and procedures — which may not align with the vehicle manufacturer's repair specifications. You have the right to choose your own repair facility. A shop that follows OEM procedures and bills accordingly may submit a supplement that State Farm resists — but that supplement represents the actual cost of a safe, proper repair.
KNOWN TACTIC
CCC Valuescope Total Loss Valuations
State Farm relies heavily on CCC Valuescope for total loss valuations. These reports frequently undervalue vehicles by sourcing comps from different markets, applying aggressive condition adjustments, and using wholesale rather than retail data. The comps in a CCC report should be scrutinized — are they from your local market? Are they the same trim and equipment? Were condition adjustments applied, and on what basis?
How We Handle State Farm Claims
Evidence Over Opinion. Process Over Pressure.
We've handled hundreds of State Farm claims. We know the 17c formula inside and out — and we know how to dismantle it with market-based evidence. For total loss disputes, we source local retail comps that expose the gap between CCC Valuescope's output and actual market value. For repair disputes, we document every denied procedure with OEM citations and P-page references. State Farm responds to evidence because evidence is what umpires and regulators evaluate.

State Farm Claims FAQ
Can I file a diminished value claim against State Farm?
Yes, if the State Farm policyholder was at fault. DV is a third-party tort claim in most states. State Farm will likely apply the 17c formula and offer a low number. A certified DV appraisal based on actual market data produces a defensible number that's typically 3–5x higher than State Farm's 17c calculation.
State Farm removed the appraisal clause from my policy. What can I do?
You still have options: file a complaint with your state's Department of Insurance, send a formal demand letter with a certified appraisal, or pursue the claim in small claims court. The appraisal is still the foundation — it documents the evidence regardless of the dispute path.
State Farm says my car is worth less than what I see online. Why?
State Farm uses CCC Valuescope, which pulls from databases that include wholesale and auction data — not retail. The comps may also come from different geographic markets with lower pricing. A certified appraisal uses local retail comparables that reflect what you'd actually pay to replace your vehicle.
My shop says State Farm won't pay for OEM parts. What are my rights?
In most states, you have the right to request OEM parts. State Farm's Select Service agreements favor aftermarket parts to control costs, but your policy language and state law may give you the right to OEM. Check your policy and your state's aftermarket parts disclosure requirements.
